Add a CommentI love books with flawed, complex characters and incredible settings, so I was really drawn into this novel. Rufi Thorpe skillfully wrote about all of the characters so empathetically; even the smallest characters felt so fully realized, and I felt for everyone, even when they were making selfish or otherwise terrible decisions. This book covered so much - mental health, the Holocaust, the difficulties of parenthood - all against the magnificent backdrop of Vilnius, Lithuania. I was left thinking about this book for a while after I finished it.
Rufi Thorpe is an excellent writer. I would compare her to Jodi Picoult in the way that she gets into the minds of her characters. She brings them alive and she leaves you with the question -- is this fiction or non-fiction. This book is awesome! Her other book "The Girls From Corona Del Mar" is also excellent. A really good read!
