This mystery was originally written in 1963, when LSD and electroconvulsive therapy were more widely used than they are now. But not all the psychiatrists at Steen Clinic approve, and there is considerable hidden conflict among the staff. The administrative officer, who is not a psychiatrist, and not particularly well liked, is found with a chisel expertly applied to her heart. Dalgliesh is called in--from a boring party celebrating his most recent book of poetry. The staff has already done the right thing--segregated patients into one room, staff into another, awaiting his arrival. He soon sends the patients home, and focuses on the staff. Many have opportunity, but who has motive? Too many, it turns out. Dalgliesh fears that he faces his first failure, but he pulls this one out of the fire, with the help of Tigger, the cat ostensibly belonging to the dead woman.
