While the world has made encouraging strides in the fight against global poverty, there is a hidden crisis silently undermining our best efforts to help the poor. It is a plague of everyday violence. Beneath the surface of the world's poorest communities, common violence, like rape, forced labor, illegal detention, land theft, police abuse and other brutality, has become routine and relentless. And like a horde of locusts devouring everything in their path, the unchecked plague of violence ruins lives, blocks the road out of poverty, and undercuts development. How has this plague of violence grown so ferocious? The answer is terrifying, and startingly simple: There is nothing shielding the poor from violent people. In one of the most remarkable, and unremarked upon, social disasters of the last half century, basic public justice systems in the developing world have descended into a state of utter collapse. Here the authors offer a searing account of how we got here, and what it will take to end the plague.

A fantastic and troubling book. I consider myself socially conscious but the author presented insight that I had not considered previously. Justice is the most important task facing the world today. I immediately bought four copies of this book in order to share it with others.

My concept of reality has been forever changed by Haugen's book. I doubt I will ever be able to forget the faces and stories of the victims of violence presented here, and I think this is the success of the book.

I was deeply moved by this book. Prior to reading it, I was ignorant of the enormity of the issue of everyday violence in the lives of poeple who struggle with poverty. Gary Haugen clearly shows how violence undermines the effect of our efforts to alleviate poverty. He explains why they cannot be fully effective without addressing the issue of violence. Gary and the organization he leads, International Justice Mission (IJM), are making a difference on a global scale. Reading this book opened my eyes and I highly recommend it.
