Novels in verse are a bit hit or miss for me, but this one is flat-out great. Burg tells the story of a slave, Grave, who leaves her family and the fields to move into the Big House to work. This book alternates between being heartwrenching and deeply hopeful, and is a note-perfect look at slavery that doesn't shy away from its horrors while remaining totally kid-appropriate. Beautifully written and deeply emotional.
