Zoey Redbird gets stuck in the otherworld and her friends have to work together to get her out before she has to stay there for eternity. Not to mention Kalona is on his way to make sure she never leaves; Stark, Zoey's guardian, attempts to recover her soul before it's too late. This book is awesome! Sitting on the edge on your seat, can't stop reading until 4 am, read the whole book in 10 hours kind of book. Cast sure knows how to get you hooked on the House of Night!

“Get thee behind me, Satan!”

SAPPHIREBEAR15 Jun 18, 2012

“Zo, I'm not a damn pussy!'

Erik, looking very tall and full-grown, kick-your-butt vampyre-like, snorted sarcastically and then said, 'No, you're a damn human. Wait, that does make you a pussy!”

“I'm her protection! I don't care if it's in this world or the next. Just show me how to get where she is, and I'll be there for her. ~Stark”

“My mama told me don't trust no white boy, even a pretty one. I'm thinkin' a pretty white boy with wings explodin' up from the ground in a mess of blood and ugly-ass bird things is double trouble." - Kramisha (Ch 5)”

“I should have kissed more than your hand...thought I'd have more time," he whispered between liquid, panting breaths. "...too late now."
I looked into his eyes and completely forgot the rest of the world. In that moment, all I knew was that I was holding Stark in my arms, and I was going to lose him very, very soon.”

“Actually, since I'm gay I think I should count for two guys instead of just one. I mean, in me you get the male point of view and you don't have to worry about me wanting to touch your boobies.”

“Last time I saw you, I said that it hurt too much to love you. But I was wrong about that. The truth is it hurts too much not to love you.”

The narrative mode is told from multiple points of view in third-person limited (including Stark's, Kalona's, Aphrodite's, Heath's, Rephaim's, and Stevie Rae's) and first-person narrative in Zoey's point of view, as in previous books.
After Zoey's soul shattered, she reawakened in the Otherworld. The Council revealed that if her body were remain unoccupied by her spirit, it will die in a week, although the return of a previously shattered soul was unheard of. Unwilling to take the chance, Neferet binds Kalona's soul with Darkness and sends him after Zoey to kill her.
Following a prophecy of Kramisha's, Darius, Aphrodite and Stark take Zoey's body to the Isle of Sgiach, a vampire who had previously separated from the main society. With the guidance of her Guardian, Stark undertakes journey to the Otherworld where he slays his Warrior self to become the Shaman and reach Zoey.
Upon reaching the goddess' realm, Stark follows his bond of loyalty to find Zoey, and Heath with her. Following a revelation from Nyx, Stark convinces Heath that he has to leave Zoey and move on so that she, in turn, can move on and save the world from Kalona and Neferet. Stark approaches Zoey afterwards, but she is initially afraid. To motivate her, Stark goes out of the sacred grove to fight Kalona. Realising that she can't allow another one of her friends to die, she calls the pieces of her soul. However, before she can intervene, Kalona manages to kill Stark.
Zoey attacks Kalona and overpowers him, demanding the lifedebt owed to her for Heath. Nyx appears forces him to revive Stark before banishing him again. Zoey fully accepts Stark as her Guardian and lets him drink from her so he could heal, and upon doing so the elements fill Zoey again and restore all of her tattoos. Following Spirit she returns to the real world, bringing him with her.

The language is getting worse as the books go on. The characters in this book talk like 12 year olds who just learned how to use curse words. Everything is repetitive and explained over and over like the readers are at the 7th grade reading level. They used a lot of slang that they think is used in real life. The interaction between Stevie Rae and Rephaim is certainly the most interesting plot twist the authors have introduced, and this book is heavy on its development, with a lot of perspective from both characters. I enjoyed the storyline between Stevie Ray and Rephraim and look forward to reading more concerning them. *spoiler*What I didn't like or even understand was how what happened to Dallas happened so quickly...I was disappointed with that part. They seem able to jump back and forth between light and darkness as they wish. I really liked Dallas and didn't think that was fair. Also the rules kept changing to suite anyone and everyone - vampires performing wiccan rituals? Priestess, queens and goddesses made at will (I mean really!?!), "rules" changing at will as they serve the plotline, apparent domination of the world's cultural history is made by Vampyres.

I strongly disliked *spoiler* seeing Heath say goodbye the most. He was my personal favorite and I was very upset that they killed him off. *Spoiler* He says he will find Zoey again when his soul gets reborn, will that be in the next book or 20 years from now? Not one word was spoken about how to tell his parents. They live in their own world where basic rules or manners don't seem to apply to them. The only good thing that came from Heath dieing was Zoey may not be such a $lut anymore, she's down to only Stark now.
I loved the fact that there was more of Aphrodite and Darius, (though I don't really like the way she talked in this book) I missed seeing more of Damien and Jack (Erik seems to have moved off into adulthood with the teachers (where he belongs) thankfully there wasn't much from the twins because I can NOT stand the twin speak. I will read the next book but they are not getting better...books 1 to 4 are still the best yet.
