It's a chilling reality that homicide investigators know all too well: the last face most murder victims see is not that of a stranger, but of someone familiar. These doomed relationships are the focus of Ann Rule's sixteenth all-new Crime Files collection.

What made Ann Rule true crimes books stand out are her laborious research, photographs of the crime scenes and people involved. Read this when the book first came out and frustrated to find that the July 2011 deaths of the young son and exotic girl friend of a billionaire in a Coronado mansion was left "hanging" at the end. Apparently it still is unresolved and in the news today:

Good, but not up to Ann Rule’s usual high standards. The first case was wonderfully narrated and compelling. The second, although just as interesting, is ongoing and unsolved which leads to (of necessity) a very incomplete feeling for the reader. Also, there is one glaring fact (which I feel is key to the case) which the author does not pick up on or even really explore, so that is also disappointing. Finally, the author’s viewpoint in the case entitled “The man who loved too much” seems to be somewhat askew (at least in this reader’s opinion). All in all, a good, albeit slightly frustrating, read.

I was unable to read this version of the book as it skipped from page 73 to 153 and then from 175 back to 75. Very confusing, however I really want to read it, so I ordered a different version of the book.
