Marcia and Lloydie had built a wonderful, secure life in London-- until their sixteen-year-old son, Ryan is brutally murdered. Consumed by grief and rage, Marcia is forced to assume the role of supporter for her inconsolable husband, who has distanced himself and created a secret life. She must also bridle her dark feelings and must go to court alone for the trial of her son's killer, Tyson. As the trial takes apart her son's life and reassembles it in front of strangers, Marcia finds her beliefs and assumptions challenged as she learns more about her son's death and of Tyson's life.

A short, dreary novel. Two stars seems too generous, but one star seems cruel. The story is well-written and features some memorable passages, but the story overall is forgettable. The ending is contrived and made me mad.

This is an emotional and compelling story. Edwards puts you right into the mind of Marcia, the mother of a teenage boy who was violently murdered by a schoolmate. With sparse but impactful language, it kept me up turning the pages long into the night.
