This is one of the most unusual books I have read in a long while. The story is "scattered" among several characters, each a bit odd and filled with quiet desperation. I couldn't recommend it...

I chose this book because of the theme - a family raising a chimpanzee (I loved We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves) but this book is about so much more than just a chimp in a human family. It describes coming of age, family relationships, and race. It's a book about how we try (and fail) to talk about these things. The author very convincingly tells the story through the voices of several different characters. Fantastic book!

I wanted to live inside this book at times - Kaitlyn Greenidge's writing is so vivid and conversational and absorbing. This book deals with the lived experiences of people of color (specifically black women) in America. It's also a story of language acquisition, family, fitting in, and finding yourself. I look forward to many more novels from this author!
