Dahlia Dutton's father is thrilled when the aged and esteemed Augusta Winthrow appears in his office and makes a deal for his company, Music City Salvage, to take over and liquidate her massive family estate in Chattanooga. He gives the job to Dahlia, who gathers a crew and a couple of trucks and heads for the estate--an ancient house, a barn, a carriage house, and a small, overgrown cemetery that Augusta Winthrow left out of the paperwork. She left out a lot of things. Although in unusually great shape, the empty house is harboring something angry and lost, and this is its last chance to raise hell before the house is gone forever. After all, there's still room in the strange little family plot. --

I generally enjoyed this atmospheric tale of a group of house deconstructors who discover the house they are taking apart holds more than just valuable antique finishings. The property holds dark secrets and a possible ghost or two. My main complaint is that the book was not really scary. I did really like the voice author Cherie Priest writes in and the spooky atmosphere she created. I found the story easy enough to get into, even though it lacked the jumps I was hoping for. I'd be willing to give her future books a try and just hope she gets better at executing the scares.

This horror novel kept my interest because I love old houses and hidden family secrets, but it felt a bit dragged out in revealing the hidden family secrets, which were, at least, fascinating.

I truly loved this story. I am not really a fan of modern horror but I do love the classics. This book had modern style writing but in the spirit of a good classic horror. It was very suspenseful and I couldn't put it down leading to me staying up until 3 am on a work night, but it was all worth it!

I typically do not read this type of book. I don't watch horror flicks for sure. Not even sure why I was drawn to check it out! That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The characters were developed well enough to be engaging and the author was even able to keep me from closing the book and saying "Naw---I don't think so", even though the folks stayed in the house that all of them knew contained ghosts. Maybe it had just the right amount of escapism and scariness. I'd say if you enjoyed the movie Poltergeist, you should give this a try.

Compelling characters, a race against time, and home improvement in a creepy haunted house book that gave me goosebumps. Cherie Priest is known for interesting characters, realistic group dynamics, and fast-paced horror plots, and this book contains all three. If you loved films like “The Amityville Horror” and “The Woman in Black”, or want a good scare, you will enjoy this.

"When in trouble, when in doubt- run in circles, scream and shout."

"He said you couldn't compare a house to a living, breathing person- it wasn't the same thing. In her sentiment, that was the sacrilege, right there."

"My name is Dahlia Dutton, and I'm sorry about what's coming. I want you to know, it isn't up to me. I'd save you if I could, but I can't- so I'll save what pieces of you I can. In that way, you'll live on somewhere else. That's all I can offer. But I promise, I will take you apart with love... and I'll never forget you."
