This film is about the agonizing spiritual crisis of C. S. Lewis when his wife died from cancer. The love, grief, pain, and sorrow were so shattering to Lewis that his basic Christian beliefs, magnificently communicated in his many books, were now called into serious doubt.

If asked to name their poison, not many speak for this. I wanted a little time with the man widely recognized as the most effective Christian apologist of our era. Knowing he could talk the talk, I wondered about the walk. Perhaps being engrossed is a function of something to read between the lines. Sustained my interest level to the end. I think it adds to the pleasure to discover this man within this British production. Events in a comfortable English life. I think it makes a difference that they haven't gone very American for Joy, played here by Claire Bloom, but her performance gives us a real person. Not in any way related to a song heard awhile back that went, 'Joy to the world was a beautiful girl, but to me Joy only meant sorrow'.
