I received an advanced copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

K.J. Charles isn't just one of my favorite romance writers - she's one of my writers, period. I've been eagerly anticipating this book for months, and it definitely didn't disappoint! When a teenage heiress elopes to Scotland with a fortune hunter, her family turns to Martin St. Vincent, a free Black Briton whom they once enslaved, to bring her back. Martin calls in the help of Theodore Swann, a poor writer with his own ties to the young heiress, and their relationship develops from there. Like basically all of Charles's books, “Wanted, A Gentleman” is beautifully written and well-characterized, with a strong, interesting romance at its core. The book's greatest strength is its willingness to address head-on the complicated relationship that Martin has with his former owners and the difficulties of being a Black man in a very white environment in ways that feel natural and necessary to the plot. My only complaint is that I wish the novel were longer; another 30-40 pages would have given Martin and Theodore’s relationship a bit more room to develop. On the whole, though, "Wanted, A Gentleman" is another excellent romance from one of the best writers in the genre. Highly recommended!
