Goya's Ghosts is a sweeping historical epic, told through the eyes of celebrated Spanish painter Francisco Goya. Set against the backdrop of political turmoil at the end of the Spanish Inquisition and start of the invasion of Spain by Napoleon's army, the film captures the essence and beauty of Goya's work which is best known for both the colorful depictions of the royal court and its people, and his grim depictions of the brutality of war and life in 18th century Spain. Brother Lorenzo, an enigmatic, cunning member of the Inquisition's inner circle who becomes infatuated with Goya's teenage muse, Ines, when she is falsely accused of heresy and sent to prison.

Forman's finale.... another great, challenging work that never got a fair shake from moronic "critics" and soft in the head, soft in the belly, intellectually lazy & timid American viewers who prefer sugar-coated lies to bitter truth. Standout performance by Javier Bardem as hypocritical cleric who turns out to be a rapist. Trump era & evangelical mulligans, anyone???

I agree with many of the commenters here: it is a chaotic mix of fiction and reality; reminiscent of old time movies, where a fictional protagonist meets up with all kinds of famous historical people. It gives the impression of being cut down from a longer movie, hence some of the unfortunate editing choices. And Natalie Portman is Natalie Portman. What are you going to do? And yet, there is also a lot to like. The writing and acting (most of it) is deeply felt, particularly on Stellan Skarsgard's part. There are truly gorgeous sets, scenery, costumes and cinematography. I saw this film years ago, and it has stuck with me ever since.

Watched this because of the names of some of those involved in making the film or appearing in it. I found it choppy and hopelessly overdone, and almost completely lacking in any subtlety. Opinions on the film vary widely. Sadly a waste of their talents (and my time). The best one-line review might be: Rotten Tomatoes scores- 30% (critics) 57% (audience).

This is a 2006 Spanish-American drama directed by Miloš Forman.
Although the historical setting of the film is authentic, the story about Goya trying to defend a model is fictional, as are the characters Brother Lorenzo and the Bilbatúa family.
However, it is so well-contrived that the history in those days seems profoundly realistic---looks even better than the authentic history.
As a history buff and Goya fan, I truly enjoyed the whole story.

A very powerful story... epic in proportion... and very well told.

Really enjoyed the strong cast (especially Barden and Portman -- who essentially plays three characters), locale, and cinematography. // A fictionalized story involving a real person (Goya), with an interesting representation of the living conditions, events, and politics of the period (which spanned the Spanish Inquisition, French Revolution, and subsequent invasion of Spain by Napoleon). // Restricted rating due to scenes of torture and other graphic violence, rather than nudity and sex.

Interesting movie, but extremely depressing. If you like happy-endings, this is not a film for you. There is NO way a girl could have suffered and survived the torture the main character endured. A strong man might have, but not a girl like the frail Portman. This is one of the low keys of the film for me, since I don’t like movies that pretend to be accurate and portray the most unlikely scenes. Barden, as always, loves to play the nutty type look; no news there.

Engaging and extremely powerful performances by Bardem and Portman. Skarsgard's performance as Goya is understated which works well within this particular story line Excellent make up artistry . Goya's artwork truly grasped and represented the way the common people saw their lives as dictated by the church and the inquisition.

Well acted and great theme to work with, but ultimately a disappointing film. Javier Bardem is terrific. Natalie Portman is good. The guy that plays Goya is okay. The movie does a good job depicting 19th century Spain and the insanity of the Inquisition.

Q: How does Randy Quaid keep getting work?
