In bestseller Elin Hilderbrand's first Christmas novel, a family gathers on Nantucket for a holiday filled with surprises.Kelley Quinn is the owner of Nantucket's Winter Street Inn and the proud father of four, all of them grown and living in varying states of disarray. Patrick, the eldest, is a hedge fund manager with a guilty conscience. Kevin, a bartender, is secretly sleeping with a French housekeeper named Isabelle. Ava, a school teacher, is finally dating the perfect guy but can't get him to commit. And Bart, the youngest and only child of Kelley's second marriage to Mitzi, has recently shocked everyone by joining the Marines. As Christmas approaches, Kelley is looking forward to getting the family together for some quality time at the inn. But when he walks in on Mitzi kissing Santa Claus (or the guy who's playing Santa at the inn's annual party), utter chaos descends. With the three older children each reeling in their own dramas and Bart unreachable in Afghanistan, it might be up to Kelley's ex-wife, nightly news anchor Margaret Quinn, to save Christmas at the Winter Street Inn. Before the mulled cider is gone, the delightfully dysfunctional Quinn family will survive a love triangle, an unplanned pregnancy, a federal crime, a small house fire, many shots of whiskey, and endless rounds of Christmas caroling, in this heart-warming novel about coming home for the holidays.

I loved this book - the first in the trilogy. The characters come alive from the beginning - a great read!

I read the third book in this trilogy before reading this first one. I must say however that this did not detract from the story in any way. Although I knew what would happen I enjoyed reading the novel as the characters 'spoke to me.' A good start to a very good trilogy.

This is the first time I've read anything written by Elin Hilderbrand. It was not the typical magical Christmas story you would expect. The whole family was in crisis with one problem or another. It was an OK quick read.

2/1 - This book isn't giving me the same kind of feeling as any of the previous Christmas books I've read over the past month. There is drama galore, and it's not ridiculous drama that is so dramatic it's funny, it's depressing drama that would be killing my Christmas spirit if it was still before Christmas. Cheating spouses, the success of Christmas dinner in doubt, and the tragic loss of a family member on Christmas day all add up to a book that definitely does not resemble any happy Christmas book I've ever read before. To be continued...

3/1 - Alright, I read another 11 pages but that's it. I'm done with this 'Christmas' book that's making me depressed instead of happy. DNFed after 105 pages.

This book was a charming & sweet read. It isn't deep but it has a bit of magic in it & it is light but readable.

This was a delightful book. Its characters were an array of funny & serious. The story showed the dysfunctions of a family in such a humorous way that it was fun to read. It reminded me of Grisham's "Skipping Christmas" with the hubbub of activities going on during that busy season.

Not your average heart-warming Christmas tale. What many families REALLY go through during stressful holiday times.
However, there is still enough redemption to satisfy holiday reading tastes.

Hilderbrand's books are always an enjoyable read for me. Family and all the inter-relationships are important parts of her novels. This one takes place over a few days around Christmas, a time that is not always joyful and happy no matter what the hype would have us believe. Hilderbrand shows us that we can enjoy it, in spite of the challenges life can bring. There was enough drama, life lessons, and romance to keep me involved.
