Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive. Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

Now I see that this is the 2nd of 4 books in The Lunar Chronicles. I have a long way to go without any "happily ever afters" - and maybe there won't be any - but now I must know what happens to the interesting characters. This 2nd book builds on the 1st, yet enough background is given for the reader to catch up. Cinder and Scarlet's lives mysteriously intertwine with a purpose well worth fighting for. I like the subtle references to the fairy tales (Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood). As in "Cinder," there is much struggle and not much happiness. However, I have learned to believe in the characters' abilities to overcome the unusual futuristic obstacles that get in their way.

I love how this series mixes classic fairy-tales with science fiction. Very intriguing and well written.

The author was able to beautifully re invent another fairy tale with a bad ass heroine. The book is exciting and action packed.

On the other hand, I'm starting to feel that this world that the author's created is a little more than she can chew on. A bunch of new stuff was introduced in Scarlet and while I enjoyed it, I would've liked to read more about the Lunars, this new futuristic Earth with its advanced technology and of course, the plague. It'll be tricky since she's further adding new characters in the next installmemt when we've only made a little progress in the original storyline. Nonetheless, I know I'll like the next book for its characters.

I didn't like the new characters at all. Wolf was just annoying and way to secretive, and Scarlet was the worst. She would overreact and jump to conclusions too easily. Also, it took forever for Cinder and everybody to meet. However, I love learning about the world of the novel and the original characters. I think the first book was better, but the second book was more exciting.

I love hate the new characters. Scarlet jumps from being annoying and weak to strong and sassy. It all makes sense but is disconcerting. The whole dilema in this series just got more interesting though I have no idea how they are going to get out of this now.

It was a difficult start; it appeared to be too dialogue heavy. I would have preferred a prologue. I did not become completely engaged until two-thirds of the way through. Meyer has crafted two stellar modernized versions of classic tales. Anxiously awaiting the third installment.
