As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes.

I am not worthy to comment mathematically, but about this movie, I want to say: INFINITESIMALLY FANTASTIC! All the poignant moments, the fun moments, tear jerking funny and happy moments, the elucidation of the brilliance, as well as and the degree of humility and character in general, of these beautiful women of vision. Which vision must have provided such resolve to keep them persisting through such circumstances. Such circumstances for which so many of us should feel unspeakably ashamed (speaking as a white male)... shooting ourselves in the foot and wondering why we've been tripping. And so much I obviously don't know how to say quite properly. Anyway... Feeling appreciation to all who brought "Hidden Figures" about, the time for which I can only imagine how long some people worked and waited so patiently and painstakingly. It is as it says on the dvd jacket- "Uplifting." Thank you, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson.
I'm with Wildct2003 - who mentions "an expanded version (miniseries?) covering the characters' lives and times." How much more information can/should we bother these incredible women for - or would the book provide all that's needed?

What an amazing story based on true events about how much black female mathematicians contributed into the NASA space research in 1961. A very powerful and inspiring movie!

Excellent movie. Fascinating characters of real life people, their talent, the politics of segregation, inequality.

An inspirational film that makes you cry tears of joy and sadness. This film didn’t just re-iterate the struggles of African American women, but the struggles women had to endure in a ‘man’s field’ period. The lash of racism, elitism and privilege that some characters assert is absolutely frustrating and mind blowing. Especially, to think that it is still as prevalent today as it was then. The ladies were superb and Kevin Costner’s role balances out all the other biased authoritative figures really well.

Amazing, so relevant, how far we've come and how far we haven't. How long does it take? The power of one person! Girl power! All are prompts for more discussion on engaging conversation if you care to be an engaged human.

"Here at NASA we all pee the same color", a priceless quote!

Many excellent quotes in IMDb and of course from its book at goodreads .... this classic gem appeared in the film but not in the book:

Despite what you may think, I have nothing against y'all.
- I know, I know you probably believe that.
