Absolutely one of my favorites. Wonderful characters, amazing imagery, and an exciting and engaging plot with just enough turns!

British fantasy that influenced Lewis and Tolkien. It feels a little old fashioned compared to them, but is important for those interested in the history of fantasy lit. Also see "The Princess and Curdie."

I really enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to reading the sequel. George MacDonald is a really good author and is good at giving descriptions that help you to visualize the story and bring you into the world of the book. I felt that he did a great job of developing the plot and characters and helping the reader understand the mentality of his characters as well as their motives. This was a very enjoyable read.
