A great uplifting WWII story of resistance. The young couple of the zookeepers come to the decision to smuggle over Jewish people ( all in all 300) out of the Warsaw ghetto and hide them in the basement of their villa on the territory of the Zoo. It was a heroic deed. The movie may seem slow in action, but there is an explanation to the slow pace: you must be very careful because you are saving people, you are walking on the edge of danger every moment.

total waste of time. can't believe people are giving it 4 and 5 stars.

Creative adaptation of a WWII autobiography, in an unusual setting: the Warsaw Zoo. The zookeepers, a married, gentile couple, each arrive separately at their decision to help smuggle over 300 Jews out of the embattled Warsaw ghetto and hide them in their villa basement. How they manage this is clever and unexpected. Jessica Chastain plays the wife, and Belgian actor Johan Heldenbergh plays the husband; Heldenbergh is especially effective as the quiet but passionate fighter. Because the director is Niki Caro (Whale Rider), there's a mixture of lyricism (the animal scenes in the beginning have a lovely fairytale ambience) and brutality, especially the dangerous dance of feigned attraction that Chastain engages in to foil the ranking Nazi. Notes: due to rape & murder scenes, may be hard for children to watch. If you like this film, you may also like The Pianist, another Polish WWII story of resistance.

Excellent movie. What this family did was heroic.

All the terrible things Germany did in WWII here is yet another movie displaying more violence and cruelty. May be hard for children to see.

worst movie we have seen in a long time-at least there is an off switch! Another comment says "a waste of time", how true. So many really good European movies/series out there that it is a shock to find one as bad as this. And we only watched 20 minutes!

Good movie but unable to understand most of the fake accents. Lost a lot of the dialogue.

Pretty good movie. A bit Hollywoodish. Wish I had known about the book before we went to Poland a couple years ago. Would have made a point to go to the zoo.

A fantastic movie involving the Holocaust from the true story perspective of zoo owners in Warsaw. The bonus feature includes video of the son and daughter that are portrayed in the movie.
