After Larson's thrilling "Defy" trilogy, I was SO excited to see that she was doing a Swan Lake retelling. First thing when approaching this book: completely forget Swan Lake. Some of the same motifs are present, but other than that, it's not really a re-telling. And second thing: it's a very different style than the "Defy" trilogy. To be frank, I was disappointed. It felt like it was written before the other series because the writing felt less mature. Evalayn had a lot of Mary Sue qualities, and it felt like more of a middle grade than a YA in a lot of ways. The ending certainly leaves us on a cliffhanger for the sequel, but I don't know that I'm invested enough in this world and these characters to pursue it.
