When the lights go out one night, no one panics. Not yet. The lights always come back on soon, don't they? Surely it's a glitch, a storm, a malfunction. But something seems strange about this night. Across Europe, controllers watch in disbelief as electrical grids collapse. There is no power, anywhere. A former hacker and activist, Piero investigates a possible cause of the disaster. The authorities don't believe him, and he soon becomes a prime suspect himself. With the United States now also at risk, Piero goes on the run with Lauren Shannon, a young American CNN reporter based in Paris, desperate to uncover who is behind the attacks. After all, the power doesn't just keep the lights on--it keeps us alive.

A great deal of technical detail that isn't easily understandable for the average person.

Read more like a technical summary of how the electrical grid can be hacked. About a third of the way through it became tiresome for me, bouncing around one location to another. With several library books waiting on my shelf to be read, I bailed. Perhaps the last half of the book will ratchet up the drama. I didn't have the patience to wait.

Interconnected power grids and smart homes - wonderful technology? Or are we starting to rely more and more on technologies vulnerable to cyberattack? Blackout is a great thriller that shows what could happen if the entire power grid across a large area was wiped out at once - it isn't pretty. I recommend this book if you enjoy feeling a bit more worried and paranoid about the world when you finish a story. :-)

I read an updated version to be published June 6 2017.
An electrifying thriller. Originally published in German in 2012, this translation flows flawlessly in English.
Fast paced and very intense. The race to get the power back on before anarchy reigns is very realistic. This book reinforces my stance on nuclear power as not being safe because of spent fuel rods.
