Amazing thriller, this Stephen King film unnerved me far more than the Shining. Kathy Bates is terrifying.

Fan obsession can be brutal. Or Misery. Good story line from Stephen King. (I didn’t read the novel.) Paul Sheldon (James Caan) does a great job trying to outwit Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates). Makes depression and obsession scarey.

Stephen King, one of America's best horror writers and an acute observer of the homey made slightly askew. What seems to be a bucolic farmhouse nestled in the snowy West hides a famous writer, trapped by a sociopathic fan who patiently nurses him back to health just for her abuse and a novel tailored just for her. Both James Caan and Kathy Bates play their roles well and you follow along his increasing desperation and clever plotting to get back his freedom. This is mostly psychological horror but be forewarned of a deliberate attack that's bloody.

As good as you're going to get for its genre. Best Stephen King movie I've ever seen.

Whenever I watch a film adaptation, I always find myself analyzing the deviations from the original novel. Most of the time I find the version of the story in the book is superior-one reason I loved the Lord of the Rings movies was because they hewed so close to Tolkien's vision (though I admit to being pleased that they cut the ponderous Tom Bombadil chapter from the film). With Rob Reiner's film version of Misery we get something of a hybrid. The parts of the movie dealing directly with Paul Sheldon (James Caan) and Annie Wilkes (a very funny and very scary Kathy Bates) are true to Stephen King's tension-filled novel. However, the film also contains a detective story element that is not a part of the original. Richard Farnsworth's portrayal of likably gruff local sheriff, Buster, provides a nice counterbalance to Bates' obsessive and unstable turn as Wilkes. Even if you're like me and you prefer a movie to stay faithful to its source material, you will enjoy this movie (but stay far away from another King film, The Running Man, which tells an almost wholly new story from the book, and not a very good one). As always, you should read the book first, and then enjoy one of the few worthwhile film adaptations of a King novel. Interestingly, the two best King movies, Misery and the Shining, both take place, not in King's favored Maine, but in Colorado.

Annie Wilkes: It's the swearing, Paul. It has no nobility.
Paul Sheldon: These are slum kids, I was a slum kid. Everybody talks like that.
Annie Wilkes: THEY DO NOT! At the feedstore do I say, "Oh, now Wally, give me a bag of that F-in' pig feed, and a pound of that bitchly cow corn"? At the bank do I say, "Oh, Mrs. Malenger, here is one big bastard of a check, now give me some of your Christ-ing money!" THERE, LOOK THERE, NOW SEE WHAT YOU MADE ME DO!
