This is a very good movie anchored by a wonderful performance by Chadwick Boseman playing future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall as a young man. The film is a period piece, focusing on one of Marshall's cases in the 1940's. This focus on a single case is both the film's strength and its limitation. The film ends up being just a old-fashioned courtroom drama, and it is a very good one with twists and turns along the way. But it only shows a snippet of Thurgood Marshall's career, and doesn't provide a real overview of the path that ended up with him on the Supreme Court. So while what is onscreen is very good, it felt like it was just one small chapter about Thurgood Marshall, not a full story.

4* Very good movie based on a true story.

What would otherwise be a fairly standard courtroom drama/mystery (even if it is based on true events) is made great by acting and extra historical touches. Chadwick Boseman and Josh Gad in particular are fantastic. Chadwick Boseman's death is a loss to all of us.

Excellent film about one of the early cases of Thurgood Marshall who later became the first man of color on the U. S. Supreme Court. Wish he could be back!!! Highly recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby

A fantastic look at the early years of Thurgood Marshall's life in court. Later, becoming the first African American to sit on the Supreme Court. This is a great look at one of the cases that helped Justice Thurgood Marshall become one of the preeminent litigators in America. A wonderful portrayal with Chadwick Boseman and Josh Gad.

Truly disappointed considering this powerhouse of a man. I didn't feel it did justice to his life, his accomplishments, his character. I likely first heard his name in the late '50's, early '60's, was in awe of him. For me, he ranks levels above the more noted, celebrated or recognized men of his time. He was handsome, street smart, brilliant at law and full of compassion with humility. For those who don't remember, didn't learn of experience this well-portrayed bigotry this film does deliver on these facts.

What a loss to this country that we don't have more Thurgood Marshall's, or that we do and they are not lifted up. I liked the acting of Cromwell, Chadwick and Gad and the accused.

Really enjoyed the movie, the story, and the cast! Very well-done and very frank! The only criticism is how abruptly it ended! It ought have been Part 1! There is much more to tell! Ending it with a written summary of Marshall's career felt flat! I hope there will be a Part 2, etc! This story deserves it!

Very good movie that makes me want to read more about Thurgood Marshall and see more movies about the cases that he took (win or lose).

Based on real events, this drama in the early 1940s turns out one of the best courtroom dramas in the decades. Amazing and uplifting!
