A re-telling of the classic tale about a grumpy old creature living in a cave on Mt. Crumpet who can't stand to see his neighbors in Whoville enjoying themselves. Things are especially bad at Christmas, when the Whos kick their merriment into high gear with fantastic celebrations. This year, the Grinch decides to dress up like Santa Claus on Christmas Eve and steal all the Christmas gifts and decorations so the Whos can't enjoy the season. What he finds, however, is that Christmas in Whoville is much more than gifts and decorations, it's a time to celebrate love and friendship.

It was alright, but I prefer both other versions of this story.

Grew up on this story. This version has an updated look on Whoville and the residents but didn't care too much for the music. Good version for family watching.

Too musical, and nothing like the How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Stopped watching after 20ish minutes,

The catalog description for this version of the Grinch is perfect, first of all. Secondly, I liked this version because it made the Grinch more humanly personable... but I also didn't like this version for the very same reason. The more they remake this movie, the more unsure I am if the Grinch really is supposed to be super mean, like in previous versions, or just done with society, like in this version. Also, I think I want the goat as a pet or an alarm system.

My rating 3 stars (the classic is my favourite!). My 11 year old’s rating 5 stars (has a current message). Split the difference with 4 stars...

I agree with tffny80

This version isn't as good as the original animated version or the Jim Carrey version because this Grinch is already capable of kindness to begin with - he's just un-social.
Anti-social and un-social get lumped together often but they shouldn't because they are not the same thing. Anti-social means hating society while un-social means preferring to be left in solitude. Originally, the Grinch was imagined as anti-social. He hates Christmas, therefore, he commits the anti-social act of stealing Christmas. The problem with Illumination's Grinch is that he is really just un-social. He doesn't go out because he feels lonely in social situations. He's un-social but this doesn't automatically make his character capable of committing an anti-social act like the original anti-social Grinch.

That being said, there were some potentially good emotional core moments in this movie. However, they felt empty due to the way they were randomly stitched into the storyline.
Illumination struggles with character and story development in general. I think they are just too focused on pushing out a product even if it isn't any good. Hence the minion franchise.

Amazing cinematography and a nice spin on the original story.

Nothing like Jim Carey Grinch or even the first. The story has been changed and it’s just not the same grinch. I was very disappointed with this one
