"When Mouse's dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is packed to the gills with useless garbage. That would be horrors enough, but there's more. Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather's journal, which at first seems to be the ravings of a broken mind. Until she encounters some of the terrifying things he described herself. Alone in the woods with her dog, Mouse has to confront a series of impossible terrors--because sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real, and they're looking for you. And if she doesn't face them head on, she might not survive to tell the tale"--

I really liked this book and found it to be a great mixture of horror, fantasy and folklore. There is a humorous aspect that I really liked but don’t be mistaken….it is still a horror novel. It contained one of the most terrifying scenes that I’ve ever read. It made me want to sleep with the lights on.

Overall a pretty good book. I've read people put it down because it was slow at first, but it gets pretty creepy around the midpoint. Personally, I liked the buildup with the discovery of a madman's journal and the MC's relationship with her dog. The mystery had me hooked, but once I found out what was plaguing the woods, the source of the haunt, it just kinda lost my attention. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so I won't get too descriptive. It's creepy, with a snarky MC, I like the supporting cast, the story is a little meh because of the source of the haunt, but yeah. I think if you're a dog lover who likes creepy stories that may keep you up at night, this one's for you!

PS. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was wonderful!

Not super-scary but a creepy "sequel" to A. Machen's The White People.

I'm not sure what's wrong with me, but I just wasn't creeped out.

If you love Horror, definitely check this one out! It has just the right amount of creep factor, comedic relief, and loveable snark from our main character Mouse. This one freaked me out and I loved every minute of it!

I was seriously creeped out by this book but I couldn't put it down. The relationship between Mouse and her dog Bongo is so sweet and funny, it was a nice break to the creepiness.

This book was a slow burn but a good one. Like the title suggests you think the plot is headed in one direction when it twists into something else. This is a pretty good rainy day read and actually has a bit of humor.

I got an advanced reader copy of this and gobbled it up in about 24 hours! My expectations were set by the dark and creepy cover, so I was surprised when a lot of the book was almost... lighthearted? Don't get me wrong; this is definitely horror, and it goes deliciously weird in the end. But for much of the book the low-key snark of the narrator keeps the tone lighter and less oppressive than I would have anticipated. Overall, though, I found that the book was super engaging and had a great pay-off!
