This book will make you look at an American icon in a totally different way. Jackie Kennedy Onassis was a bibliophile from an early age. Although she was most widely known for being the wife of the men she married, she truly found herself when both of her husbands died and she became a book editor. Although the book discusses some of her personal life (including that her mother hit her, that Jackie thought all upper class men cheated on their wives so therefore she was able to accept the dalliances of JFK & Onassis, and that some in her social circle considered her marriages to an Irish Catholic and a Greek to be bordering on miscegenation), most of the book discusses her career as an editor and how and why she brought specific books to life. Those books and the ones she kept in her own library were incredibly diverse and together they became a portrait of sorts of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Although there were aspects of her life and personality that I dislike, I greatly respect her decision to join the working world (originally working in a windowless cubicle and making only $10K a year) and devoting the remainder of her life to books. This is a good book about the real woman behind the icon.
