Lisa Gardner write good suspense, but a lot of it is pretty disturbing (though, thankfully, rarely graphic). While this is a Quincy/Rainie book, we've run out of ways for them to be the victims (for now) so they're back to strictly detective roles. Well, and Kimberly is pregnant, but that's primarily relevant because people offer her vanilla pudding a lot. :-) So, the actual story? Basically, it's a case study of a deeply deeply messed up man. He kills prostitutes. He is a pedophile. He makes porn (including kiddy porn). He is obsessed with spiders. He also "collects" people. He is a BAD. GUY. As usual, the story is told from multiple perspectives. As usual, Gardner is one of the few authors who does that well enough that it doesn't make me want to rip my hair out. This time, the different perspectives aren't all operating on the same timeline - which can be a bit confusing at times until you figure out exactly who is who. (It seems normal at first then you hit a set of scenes that simply can't have all happened in the same time frame.) There are a few interesting side characters that serve as much to develop the setting as to advance plot (though at least one is essential to the plot as well). I particularly liked Rita. Typical of Gardner's novels, there are twists you don't see coming that make sense in retrospect. She doesn't tend to foreshadow a lot, but I actually appreciate that. I find it a bit boring to figure out the big plot twist halfway in then spend 200 pages waiting to be right. Creepy thriller that keeps you on your toes.
