I've never seen the original or read the book, but considering the star power of the cast and my general liking of Sofia Coppola's other work, I gave this one a shot. I normally love slow-burn thrillers and gothic atmosphere, but this movie drags mainly because the characters aren't terribly interesting. Everyone felt hollow, sometimes even one-dimensional. The lighting was extremely dark, to the point of distraction; I think Coppola and her cinematographer were trying to go for a Barry Lyndon style of naturalistic lighting, but in that movie you could at least SEE what was in the frame. It's unfortunate, since the sets and costumes are quite lovely. While there are some moments of tension and dark humor, nothing ever quite gels. By the end, I was left cold and uninterested. Such a shame, since the story has potential and Nicole Kidman wrings the most out of her role. I need to get my hands on the 1971 original.
