An Enchantment of Ravens is romantic fantasy by Margaret Rogerson. It begins gradually, but rapidly picks up as main character Isobel journeys to the autumn fairy court with prince Rook. The writing is evocative, descriptive and lyrical throughout, in the best style, utilizing many metaphors and imagery to evoke the fairyland setting. The strong plot also holds the message of imperfection triumphing, and how glamoured ideals can ultimately lead to the opposite. This is demonstrated subtly and effectively, pairing with how sameness can lead to complacency. There were many hidden meanings applicable to reality throughout, all of which contribute greatly. I loved the concept of mortal humans having “magic” through everyday activities. Isobel is a well-written, multifaceted and determined narrator whose strength sees her through, her passion for painting translating well. Rook is also appealing, different from many fairytale princes, who is shown to be truehearted at the end. Having now read this novel several times, I appreciate it more each time. The only possible change would be to strengthen the ending. Despite the deceptively simple premise, An Enchantment of Ravens has much to offer and would be recommended for any fantasy lover, or one who might like a unique story in a familiar setting. Rating: 4.5/5 Stars @BellaReads of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board “An Enchantment of Ravens,” by Margaret Rogerson is a perfect read for someone looking for a short fantasy read. This novel tells the story of Isobel, a mortal girl living among fearies, famously known for her Craft. Normally, Isobel is very careful and professional when interacting with her customers, but when a surprising client flutters through her parlor doors, she finds herself making a life altering mistake. This story has something for both fantasy and romance readers, and will have you tearing through the pages for what happens next. The author also does a good job with their descriptions. Her use of similes throughout her work helped me better visualize the events taking place, which led to an amazing reading experience. This book also talks a lot about enjoying the gifts and emotions that you are able to express. Through the characters, Margaret Rogerson displays that feelings and emotions don’t make you weak and that we are all given special talents, and we shouldn’t take either our talents or emotions for granted. I would give this book a 3 out of 5 star rating, and would recommend this book to people of all ages who are looking for a fun fantasy read @academia_fanatic of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
